SURPRISE WIN.

AUCKLAND TENNIS.

MISS N. BEVERLEY BEATEN.

TOUIfG PLAYER'S SUCCESS.

With the defeat of Miss Xessie Beverley (Matamata) the 1935 Auckland singles champion, by Miss Pam Cooke, the 19-year-old Eden and Epsom player, came a major surprise when the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual championship rournament was continued at Stanley Street courts this mofning. Conditions were perfect for the continuation of the tourney, although the. heat was inclined to upset some of the- players.

Keen interest was taken in the Miss Cooke-Miss Beverley match. With superb confidence. Miss Cooke went for every shot with force and accuracy and early in the match she had Miss Bevertcy in difficulty with a beautiful forehand drive that clipped the sidelines. Miss Beverley found herself unable to cope with this dazzling attack by the younger player, and although the Matamata girl used all her wiles and experience she could find no counter to an attack that became more vicious as the match wore on.

Amid loud applause the first set went to Miss Cooke at 7—5. Encouraged bv this success. Miss Cooke forced the attack even harder and went into the net to finish off rallies with beautiful smashes. Miss Beverley fought hard and gallantly, but the task was too big for her and deserved victory went to the younger player when she took the second set at 7—.5.

Like Dorothy Round
