TAKING STOCK.

PUBLIC SERVICE,

REGRADING INSPECTION.

WORK NOW PROCEEDING.

Preparatory to a regrading of the Public Service, inspectors are at present visiting Auckland, and are interviewing officers of the various Government Department*. The regrading is carried out by the Public Service Commissioners, aiid it should be done according to the regulations at intervals -of not more than five years. The revision of the grading list should have been carried out in 1934, but it was postponed under section 27 o? the Finance Act, 1933.

The regrading is being eagerly awaited by many Auckland officers, and generally it is favoured by the public servants. By its provisions Departmental heads first make reports on their staffs, officers having the right to inspect their re|»ort and to cuter an appeal it they do not consider it fair. The commissioners' inside-tors then visit each of the centres in turn and carry out further investigations. Later a<rain the Public Service Commissioners, Messrs. T. H. Mark and T. H. Boyes, will visit the centres and any officer who so wishes, may wait upon them to make any suggestions of complaints he has.

The work is considerably complicated on thics occasion because of the extension of the Departments and the changes made by the recent industrial legislation. The staff of the former Mortgage Corporation arc now again public servants, and so too are the staffs of the National Broadcasting Service and the newly-formed Primary Products Marketing Department. There are some Departments, including the railways, which are out of the control of the commissioners, and there are also a number of temporary men whose positions have not yet been settled. It is .stated, however, that the number of officers in the various Departments under the control of the commissioners, excluding administrative officers, native school teachers and officers on extended leave or on loan to other Departments, totals 7bl»».
