When the evacuation of the Frankfort reformatory owing to floods had been completed it was reported that i)#rly 50 prisoners were missinoSupporting stories of rioting which emerged despite the strict censorship imposed, National Guardsmen hinted that 10 to 50 had been killed during the rioting, but even more were either slain or drowned, or escaped, if one State official is correct.
It is stated that 3111 prisoners were originally confined in the reformatory and not 2900, the figure given to the Press. The authorities called a conference later in the day to check the figures.
Prisoners were ferried from the prison yard, which was under 20 feet of water and were distributed to gaols in surrounding cities, the Federal narcotic farm, and temporary concentration
camps. Following a plea for experienced men to man rescue boats, 191 seamen recruited in New York entrained for Louisville, where 1000 troops are due shortly.
