WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

HIS FIRST OUTING. The well-bred four-year-old Kewpie's Bingen was given his first outh.gs with the colours up when he competed at the matinee meeting last Saturday. He began fairly well on both occasions, but was not knocked about, and his efforts were quite satisfactory. Kewpie's Bingen has been given plenty of time to develop and is a nice type of pacer.

SMALL BUT SPEEDY. Although not very big, Hillcrest has a verv useful turn of speed and he was in front all the way in the two-year-old event at the matinee meeting. Hillcrest has been well educated by the ex-«outhern trainer D: O, Jones and is a particularly well-mannered pacer for a youngster. Hillcrest lias taken no harm from the outing and, if anything, bears an improved appearance.

A PROMISING FILLY. One of the most promising novices at Epsom k the three-year-old filly Forest Jewel. She has had a couple of outings in public, but on each occasion has failed to begin correctly and consequently has lost all chances. Forest Jewel competed in the City Handicap at-the matinee meeting and, beginning smartly, was always in the thick of the fray, stalling off all challenges in the straight to win by a length. It was a, very nice effort for this novice and it is to be hoped that she now gains confidence.

AN IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE. The impressive performance registered by Great Admiral to win at his first appearance at Addington upheld the high opinions held of the Nelson Bingen gelding in Auckland, and one can quite confidently predict more victories in the future for the bay trotter. According to southern reports, Great Admiral, contrary to usual, left the mark at a tangle and lost nearly a furlong. With half a mile to go .he was still standing the leaders up. 72 yardi, ' but once he settled down to bis work ha finished at a rare speed to win going away. Great Admiral is still on_ a handy mark and when the handicaps suit he will continue to do gpod service for his owner,Mr, G. J. Barton. I

NICE CUT OF YOUNGSTER. J.-.T. Paul produced a particularly fine type of -two-year-old in Axminster at th? matinee meeting and he may prove to be the best of the local juveniles in the North Island Challege Cup at Epsom next month. On Saturday he began well and was pacing neatly over the first couple of furlongs when he was brought down through no fault of his own and hie driver was tipped from the sulky. He got back again, but :in the meantime the leader, Hillcrest, had gained a big.advantage. Once pacing steadily again, Axminster showed a fine burst of speed and even then was not und-ily bustled to finish third. oThis colt is the first of . the get of Ringtrue to race in public and judging by the effort of Axminster he should prove himself at the stud.'
