ELIMINATING TRAINS.

FROM EMPIRE AIR ROUTE. British Official Wireless. (Received 12 noon.) RUGBY, January 14. An experiment designed to eliminate the long train journeys across Europe in connection . with the Empire air services, was completed successfully yesterday when the Imperial Airways flying boat Centaurus arrived at Southampton. The Centaurus left Alexandria on Tuesday morning with eight passengers and a ton of mail. After a night at Brindisi the machine travelled on to Southampton with its only halt for refuelling at Marseilles. The 850 miles to Marseilles were covered at an average speed of 170 miles an hour. The new service will not be introduced on a regular basis until a sufficient number of the 29 Empire flying boats ordered have been delivered.
