RAILWAY PROFITS

When the Minister of Railways announced the reduction of hours- to 40 per week the tide was flowing in, and the increase in traffic gave room for hope that the cost might be absorbed by increased revenue. This hope does not seem likely of realisation, judging by the first nine months' figures, which show a drop in profit of about £45,000, the revenue having increased by £531,274 and the expenses by £573,528. The next three months will see large movements of wool, butter and. grain, as well as greater return traffic through increased imports, but it is not likely that they will lift the profit anywhere near last year's figure of a million. It must be rqmembered, too, that the profit is on the working account only; the two and a half millions in interest on cost does not enter into the figures. The amount to be provided by the Consolidated Fund for railways will probably reach a record total this year. Additions and alterations to open lines and the construction of the trunk routes in both islands will further inflate the interest bill.
