TO-DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH.
BREWERIES FIRM. RUMOUR OF MERGER. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A sharp rise from £2 17/ yesterday to £3 this morning in New Zealand Breweries shares was a feature of the Exchange call to-day. Before Christmas £2 14/ was enough to purchase this scrip, but since then rumour of a possible absorption by the company of the assets of Staples' and Company, together with a capital distribution, has brought in a rush of buying orders. No confirmation of the rumour is available, but Staples' accounts closed on December 31, and the market should learn shortly what arrangements, if any, have been come to. Other important price changes this morning included a further rise in Dalgetys to £11 12/6, compared with last sale at £10 14/. \ alues of Australian securities in the miscellaneous section maintained recent strength, buyers of Tobaccos offering £2 8/6 and for Broken Hill £4 1/P. Electrolytic Zinc preferer.ces were asked for at £2 15/4, sellers 3d away. Coles sold higher, at £4 10/3. New Zealand issues saw better buyers for Beath's at £1 3/. Shillings, Ltd., brought £1 0/6. Woolworths rose to £6 15/, with more wanted at that figure. Mount Lyells were very firm, but Morgans, at 16/5, lost 2d from yesterday's level. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day.
