BIG CALCUTTA SALE
I The first sale of the year of Ceylon tea was held at Calcutta on January li. when the quantity offered amounted to 2.750,000 pounds, this being heavier than usual, due to the fact that no sale was held during the Christmas and New Year holidavs. ; Cables to hand report that quality was generally maintained but irregular. A • good demand was experienced at the sale. : with commons and low mediums advancing and others remaining strong. Actual I price alterations recorded were an advance | of %d per pound on commons, low mediums and plain 8.0.P.'5. and an increa>? I of %d per pound on fine broken Orange Pekoes and first class broken Pekoes. : Exchange was quoted at 1/6 0-32. At next week's sale the quantity brought to auction is expected to total 2,000,000 pounds.
