. SOME DOUBLE VICTORS. G. AYLING, H. HANACH, J. KING;. : The Manurewa Amateur - Athletic • Club opened.its 1937 season .with;a good muster ,of athletes and cyclists. In, the ;ladies' 'events Gwen Ayling won both with ease. She is a sister' to Herbert Ayling, the club's scratch- junior .runner, and ,by the way she ran she will certainly be on his mark also very shortly. -N. McDonald and M. Beaumont filled the minor places iu both events.
Another double winner was: Hilton Hanach, who won both distance, races. Hilton iB one of the club's' keenest members,, as he comes from' Green Lane each week and has shown improved form with every-race. Noel Dew was second on both occasions.. 1 . . ~( . ~,„■,,„,„/ ~ t ' t \~ m Much excitement was , - caused in the schoolboys' 440 yds, when two diminutive lads, A. Nicholas and 0. Hogan, -came down the,straight on terms with big Ray Marshal. The handicap was too great for the last-named, as he tired and finished third, inches behind the other two; who dead-heated." ; .-. ... ;'
The senior 440 yds was also a fine finish between Len Nicholas, Mervin Hogan and Bob French. The first-named stayed on well to get the decision from Hogan, with •B. Frcncli'third. Hogan won the 75yds earlier iu the'evening. '•' In the -cycling ■ events the' fast-improving .Tack King won both races. He is do-: velpping a powerful .finishing sprint, and won. both events 'very decisively.-. Roy Gibbs rodeVwell to finish,second from a back mark/ahd 'was making his first appearance into, .competition for over two years; He has just been reinstated, from the professional t rhhksi('and' was:-Auck-land's junior champion oh the rond about three years-ago.--If he gets back-jib his old form he will be a big asset to the clubV "' In the, two-miler Harry. .Brown : finished second. 'He'-.'was unlucky-in the half-mile; for. when in a good position to win, or certain. of : -'a; ( p1ace,-lie, .was rtih - off ..the track' by' a rider" who' ;"was' pulling 1 .up through finding the pace too hot.•'; The Papatoetoe rider/ Syd Pinfold, also rode in this event off the scratch' mark, but 'as he starting-off his toe came put of the, clip, and though-, his ,co-marker,'-"Bubs" Allen, waited for him, they could'not make.up the-addi-tional' handicap. Allen was'having his first ride since he fell off his motor bike, when he luckily only "sprained an ankle. That was three weeks ago.
