POLL 'NEXT MONTH.
GREAT INTEREST TAKEN
MANY CANDIDATES LIKELY.
On February 20 the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council will complete its term of office and a. new council-will be elected .for the ensuing two years. During the past year producers.' and vendors have displayed considerable interest in the work of the council and for the nine, seats to'bc contested it is anticipated that there will be several candidates.' On the recommendation of the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Milk Council was set up by the GovernorGeneral in 1934. Two" changes were made in the original personnel when the first election was held in 1035. The three representatives of the Auckland City Council, Messrs. G. "W. Hutchison, S. Takle and H. P. Burton, and the two representatives of the suburban local bodies, Messrs. I. J. Goldstine and H. F. r \VV Meikle, were re-elected. The producers, who are entitled to two seats, elected Messrs. J.' S. Montgomerie and A. C. Trousdale, one of the sitting members, -Mr. J., Littlejohn, .being defeated, while the milk vendors, who also have two seats, selected Messrs. I. Massey and P. W. Stonex, Mr.. J. Haslani, 'a former member, losing his seat. He regained it later, however, at a by-election caused by the death of Mr. Stonex. • : A special meeting is held to elect City Council candidates and among the names mentioned as likely candidates are those of Mr. J. Purtell, secretary of the Auckland Milk Roundsmen's Union, and Messrs. J. T. Jennings and E. F. Andrews. Local bodies in the Milk Council's area vote to decide two suburban local authority members. One vote is allowed each of the 11 local authorities for every 1000 of population in its area. It is considered that present members . will be elected unopposed. Likely candidates. Besides the four sitting members representing the producers and vendors, at least six other candidates are "offering themselves for election. Likely candidates for the two producers' seats are Mr. M. P. Welsh, president of the Auckland Fresh Milk Producers ' and Vendors' Association, Mr. J. Littlejohn, representing the North ..Shore.Producers and Vendors' Association, and Mr. P. G. Wymnn, representing a group of highquality milk producers in the East Tamnki district. For the vendors' seats new candidates may be Mr. W.V H. Mailill, president of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Vendors' Association, and Messrs. R. B. Stonex and B. S. Smith.
Milk vendors ami dairymen selling or producing for sale in the Milk- Council's district not less than 10 gallons and over 50 gallons a day are entitled to exercise, one vote. For every 50 gallons over that quantity an extra vote is allowed, with a maximum of live votes. A dairyman who is also a milk vendor can he included in one roll only. .The election of those members-who are not Ctfy Council representatives is carried out by postal' ballot.
