WORK OF TEACHERS.
REQUESTS FOR REVISION. PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION. (By Telegraph.—Own /Correspondent:') ■ WELLINGTON, this.day. Arising out of successive requests from conferences of representatives of education -, boards throughout the Dominion, a staffs-and salaries committee was set up recently at the direction of the Minister of Education, the. Hon. P. Eraser, to go into the question of the salaries and grading of members of the teaching profession and related subjects. This committee, winch consists of three representatives of education boards, three members of the New Zealand Educational Institute and three representatives of the Education Department, including the Director of Education, Mr. N. T. Lambourne,, met in 'WelHnSton just prior to Christmas and held a preliminary discussion, and framed a series of questions which will form the basis of discussion at future meetings, the first of which is scheduled for earlv in February. The questions raised are of considerable interest to teachers, generally speaking, and it is stated that the most vital issue, which will have to be determined is whether payment should be made according to efficiency, which would involve compulsory' transfers, or. on efficiency and the position held combined, such as at present. Once this point has been satisfactorily settled, it is explained, the way will then be largely paved for the drawing up of a schedule of wages and salaries. The matters which will occupy the attention of the members of the committee, between now and the February' meeting cover a wide field.' For instance, on the subject of grading it is asked whether there should be group grading, and. if so, should each group be "sub-1 graded, and should there be. groups of assistants or iust one {rroup. Suggestions are invited as to the basis of the salary scale, and this - involves the question as to whether or not there should' be differentiation in the salaries between men and women. : On this score it is asked that, if there is to |be no differentiation, between the salaries 'of men and women, what married allowance should be paid to married men? Other questions of interest are. as ■under: (1) How many grades of schools should there be, and what should be the number of pupils in each grade ? , (2) Should there be uniform annual, increments in salaries from, minimum to maximum, or should there be provision for efficiency bars? (3). Should rent be charged for a residence?: (4) Should provision be made for compulsory transfers? ■• -,- ■-..; •;"
