PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD

The fortnightly meeting of tlie Papakura Town Board was held last evening, Mr. H. E. McEntee presiding.

Housing Survey Regulations.—Tlie board decided that the townclerk should prepare a report upon tlie housing survey regulations,. in so far as they affect the Town Board.

No. 5 Scheme Subsidy.—A letter was received from tlie local certifying officer asking the board to reconsider its decision not to pay subsidy on No. 5 scheme wages, and to meet the position by reducing the hours. It was decided that the board could not alter its decision owing to its finances being strained.

Gas Chlorination Plant. —A report on the board's water supply was received from from Mr. A. Greville Walker. Mr. Walker said, that at the time of the installation of the chlorination plant, chlorine gas was not perfected, but now the difficulties had been overcome, and it was now the universal modern practice to install gas chlorine apparatus. Mr. Walker recommended that a gas plant be put in at a cost of £360. The running costs, assuming that the demand reached 30 million gallons of water per annum, would be £5 18/9 for gas, while the chloride of lime would cost £19 13/9. It was decided to call tenders for the plant and to deal with the matter further in January.

A.A. Signs—The touring manager of the Automobile Association was granted permission to 'erect 30' restriction and derestriction signs in the Town Board area.

Paupers' Graves.—The request by some undertakers for an area to be set aside in the Papakura Cemetery as a paupers* burial section was refused.

Five-day Week. —It was resolved to institute the five-day week for the office staff to bring them into line with the staffs of surrounding local bodies.

Licensing Committee Expenses. —An account was received from tlie Pukekohe Borough Council for £10 7/1, being tlie board's share of the yearly expenses of the Franklin Licensing committee. The total amount received for hotel licenses for the district was £210.

Footpath Crossings.—Several letters that had passed between the Town Board and Messrs. Lees Brothers in reference to footpath crossings for the hitter's new garage on the Great South Road were presented. The firm had offered to supply the material if the board would subsidise the labour. The chairman said he had found out since the last meeting, that the bylaws would not allow such a proceeding. Mr. Weir said it was a pity that this firm had been singled out for such treatment. The hoard decided to carry out the work under the by-laws and to refuse to subsidise tl»e labour.
