HOLLYWOOD TO-DAY.

PLANNING THE WARDROBE

ELISSA LANDI'S METHOD,

(By SHEILAH GRAHAM.)

Merle Oberon spends most of her nonworking days in overalls and sweaters romping her dogs 011 the beach or fishing in company of David Xiven. But when a party or picture demands "dressing up," Merle goes to town with the best of fashion-minded Hollvwoodites.

For her current film Omar Kiam has created for her a smart ensemble, using for the dress the new crepe print in navy and white. The navy wool coat is lined with the same material as the dress, the flowers of the material being cut out and appliqued along the la pel line and at the cuffs. Short biogc suede gloves and navy blue Oxfords complete the costume.

Another interesting creation designed by Kiam for .Miss Oberoii is especially suited for those chilly, blustery fall days. Of royal blue wool, it is high-waisted and form fitting, with slightly flaring skirts, tied at the neck in a bow of the wool material. The box sleeves are of baby lamb, strips of the same fur being used around the low neck and down the front of the coat. The hat to go with it is of baby lamb and royal blue wool.

Joan Crawford is endeavouring to bring the old-fashioned "slipper bag" baclT to popularity. She is using one to protect lier newest dancing shoes, fashioned from layer upon layer of tiny feathers. Jean recently appeared on the lot looking exceedingly smart in a tailored suit of deep Burgundy suede, with a blouse of marine suede and neckline caught with large star sapphire clip. Klissa Landi has a novel method of planning her wardrobe. She, first of ah. writes a short story concerning a girl attending the various functions appropriate to the season. She takes her wardrobe cue from this story, purchasing the proper hats, gowns and accessories to go with them. Football fan Cecilia Parker recently acquired ctilf links consisting of tiny gold footballs to wear in the sleeves of her tailored suit blouses. The footballs are engraved with lier initials in block print. As was anticipated, the street-length dinner suit is the latest addition to the short skirt mode. The cocktail dress fell by the wayside earlier this fall and now comes the' shirt dinner suit, introduced at a recent party by Olivia de Ha villain! in a knife-pleated lame skirt worn with a blue velvet Eton jacket shot with silver. Jean Muir is quite proud of the new bureau drawer pockets in her latest fall town suit. Fashioned of black wool, the jacket has a row of three pockets 0:1 either side with little silver rings forming the handles on the drawer-lii:a pockets..

The half-and-half evening gown is designed to give a girl a chance to wear her "two favourite materials simultaneously. June Travis leads the way in a dress of bouffant black taffeta in black and straight-lined black velvet in front. The last word in jewellery in Hollywood town is to wear bracelets that look very heavy, but, in reality, weigh practically nothing. Wini Shaw ha* a silvery looking bracelet that would weigli a pound if it were as solid as it looks, but, fortunately for Miss Shaw, it is highly polished aluminium, twisted into a novel effect, and is as light as a coq feather. Mousseline and flowered silver lame creates the new evening gown in the wardrobe of Madge Evans. llie full skirt has a wide band of the meta fabric on the hemline. The fnll-slee\ed ia'cket is created in matching silver. -v circular peplum adds a quaint, period effect to the ensemble. Josephine Hutchinson, who would sooner ride a horse than make pictures, has had special culottes made for her favourite sport of cocoa-brown gabardine. They are a variation of the di\ ided skirt so popular on the bridle path in days gone by.
