Equipment for Island Bases En Route. HAROLD GATTY'S PART. United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 12.30 p.m.) HONOLULU, December 9. An early start of Pan-American experimental flights to the Antipodes is indicated by the arrival of the Niagara here, taking a crew of technical experts and equipment for installation at Suva and Auckland. This equipment includes a spare motor for each base and radio equipment. The Niagara unloaded 29 cases of equipment for transhipment to Kingman's Reef, also equipment for Fanning Island. A cable ship picked up .the Pan-American Airways freighter North Wind bound for Kingman's Reef. • The date of the first flight is not fixed and the bases are not ready. Officials hope to start early in 1937. Mr. Harold Gatty, who is on the Niagara, did not comment on his' part in the project for the first technical move in the New Zealand air line. No advice has been received in Auckland as yet in regard to installation of the necessary plant here or when the service will operate.
