PUKEKOHE HIGH SCHOOL.

AWARDS FOR YEAR'S WORK. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. "There is an air of optimism in education circles to-day and big alterations to the system can be expected in the near future," said the principal, Mr. W. F. J. Munro, M.A., at the sixteenth annual prize giving ceremony of the Pukekohe .Technical High School to-d'ay. Mr. Munro said that in the future physical education would play a large part in the lives of New Zealand boys and girls and that the gymnasium would rank on a par with the laboratory. The school opened this year with a roll of 241, but this was reduced to 201 in the third term owing to pupils taking up positions or leaving to reside in another district. However, the closing roll was much better than last year. A big dishad been the absence of evening classes, but owing to lack of support it had been impossible to conduct them. With the advent of the 40-hour week, it was to be hoped that the extra free time would be turned to some purpose by the young people and allow these classes to be resumed. The chairman of the board of managers made the announcement that next year he hoped to inaugurate a scheme for the erection of an assembly hall. There were now well over 2000 old students whom he hoped would do their best to assist in some measure by small contributions. With their support and that of residents of the district, the project should be quite possible, although he did not anticipate any assistance from the Education Department.

Prizes von during the year were presented by the Rev. T. H. Roseveare, Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly. FORM PRIZES. Ill.a.- —Lindsay Herwdl. R. Burgess. Margaret Clark, Linda Wright.
