HARVESTING.
SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. POKENO DISTRICT AFFECTED. P. WD. MEN TO ASSIST. Advice has been received by Mr. H. O. Mellsop, Auckland provincial president of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, that, in order to meet the shortage of farm labour for harvesting in the Pokeno district, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, has agreed to waive the regulations that prohibit men employed in public works camps from accepting work on Saturdays and Sundays. .Mr. Mellsop said there was a shortage of harvesters in the Pokeno district and the Minister had informed him that farmers could apply to the camps for labour on any day of the week, and the moil would be given leave. They would also be permitted to work on Saturdays and Sundays if they cho~e until harvesting operations were completed. "Other districts may desire to have the same opportunity," said Mr. Mollsop. "It will be a great relief during the harvesting season."
