OBITUARY.

MRS. GEORGE WOOTTEN. Mrs. George Wootten, an old resident of Ramarama, has died at the age of 70. Mrs. Wootten was the elder daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Jessup, of Bombay, and was the first white girl horn in the settlement after the arrival of the ship Bombay. On September 24, 1884, she was married to Mr. George Wootten, who came out on the Bombay as a child, by the Rev. P. S. Smallfield. They took up land in the Pakarata district, where they built their home and resided for many years. In 1919 they moved to Ramarama, where, except for a short period spent at Papakura and Manurcwa, they had lived ever since. Two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding. Mrs. Wootten is survived by her husband, one son, Mr. H. Wootten (Ramarama) and four daughters, Mesdames C. P. Murray (Takapuna), T. A. Valentine (Palmerston North), G. Knight (Auckland) and H. McConnell (Mamirewa). MR. W. H. YATES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Wednesday. A well-known resident of Thames, Mr. William Herbert Yates, a retired technical school instructor, died lßst night after a .long illness at the age of 70 years. Born in Warwickshire, Mr. Yates came tr Jbe Dominion to settle in ChristchureK He was for some years on the staff Christ's College, and then instructor in woodwork at Burnliam School, boing transferred to Dargaville in 1915, to Thames in 1917 and to Waihi in 1924. He retired in 1931, and had lived in Thames since then. In his younger years Mr. Yates took a keen interest, in volunteering and became a good'rifle shot. He was a sergeant in the Liverpool Rifle Brigade, and, when lie came to the Dominion, a member of the Chyistchurch City Guards. He held the Queen Victoria lonT-service medal. Mr. Yates married a daughter of the lata Mr. Tracy Knight, of Auckland, and is survived by his widow and two 'grown-up daughters.
