BIG MONEY AS PRIZES. POLICE PROSECUTION" FOLLOWS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUXEDLV, this day. "It was a pure speculative venture," stated Mr. .J. K, Bartholomew, S.M., today, in imposing a line of V> on Walter O'Neill, who was charged with a breach of the Gaming Act "in promising to dispose of cash orders to the value of £f> by lottery or chance." The police stated that defendant conducted weekly dances at which Mont.? Carlo dances were Held. Prizes of small value were at first offered, but now they -had increased to the sum mentioned. The dances were well conducted, and there was no harm till the prizes were raised to a high value. Counsel said defendant had been forced to offer high prizes to meet competition and would welcome a stopping of the practice.
