SELECTOR'S OPTIMISM.
ALLEN WILL BRING BACK ASHES. y (Received 0 a.m.) LONDON", December 8. At a meeting of the Lancashire County Cricket Club the chairman, Mr. T. A. who is one of the English Test selectors, struck an optimistic note. He saicl .G. 0. B. Allen, the captain of . the M.C.C. team in Australia, is going to resuscitate English cricket and bring back jiot only the Ashes, but what was ° far more important, . Australia's goodwill. The other two selectors" of the M.C.C. team, now in a strong position in the first Test: at. Brisbane, are Messrs. P. F. Warner (chairman) and P. A. Perrin. The former was captain of the team which won the Test rubber in Australia in 1903-04, and was also official leader on the successful 1911-12 tour. Owing to a serious illness, however, J. W. H. T. Douglas took over the captaincy and led England to vietory in four of the first Tests. Perrin was one of the great batsmen Essex has produced, although he never played for England. GAME IN SOUTH. COMBINED OTAGO AND CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHIKSTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Canterbury Cricket Association decided to-niglit to approve the suggestion : jnade by the New Zealand Cricket Council that the team to meet the touring M.C.C. team at Lancaster Park on March 10, -0 aiid -li should be a combined Otago and I Canterbury .team, instead of a Canterbury rteam.
