COPRA SHIP AFIRE.
Race to Tonga With Sealed Hatches. NO FIRE-FIGHTING AIDS. SUVA, December 4. Fire was discovered in No. 4 lower hold of the Bank Line steamer Inverbank, loaded with copra, when she was 130 miles from Nukualofa, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. She proceeded at full speed with the hatches and ventilators sealed. Attempts were made to subdue tho fire by blanketing it with steam. The outbreak is believed to have originated through spontaneous combustion. The Inverbank arrived at Nukualofa at 10 a.m. on Thursday and the fire was spreading. This morning there was no improvement and No. 4 hold was flooded. It is understood that the outbreak now is under.control. The ship's sides are slightly buckled. There was a quantity of kerosene below. No fire-fighting apparatus was available at Tonga and a safe anchorage was sought as a precautionary measure. The Inverbank is anchored in five fathoms of water at Pagimotu Island, near Nukualofa. The hulj is insured at Lloyds and the cargo is underwritten by Americans.
