LOLA—MAKER OF DREAMS.
(By June Cain, Mount Albert.) Near the Other End of Somewhere lives Lola, maker of dreams. Dreams of a mother, dreams of a babe, visions of an artist, thoughts of a poet, fancies of a lover —all that is good and beautiful she forms and sends into the world. Her dwelling is no legendary hut; she is not old, as tradition demands, but slim and youthful, full of bubbling energy; nor does she keep all of her materials locked away in boxes, or stacked neatly on shelves, but arises l>efore dawn and catches the last little night mists to weave in with the colours of the rising sun and the trill of a Tark. Sometimes the fragrant scent of a violet is threaded through the web, and often a dewdrop, crystal clear, with the rays of the early sun shining in its depths. Into the woods she trips to capture the song or a bird, the gurgle j of a stream,, the <;entle sigh of the breeze in the trees, or perhaps the faint ringing of fairy bells, wafted on the summer air. Then at eve she returns to finish her creations with the glory of the dying day. There are cold, wet days, even at the Other End of Somewhere, and for such times Lola has a small reserve stock of her magic materials. Here is a pieco of precious summer sunshine, there the echo of a song bird; this box holds the aroma of ripe apples, while that contains the souls of flowers of days long past. In a corner is a heap of withering night mist and a few bright stars. Nearby, a mass of colours contrives to form the room into a veritable fairyland, and the tinkling of elfin bells sounds as if fcom afar off. You may not know Lola, or even see her, -unless you are akin to the fairies, the water sprites, the -wood nymphs, or to any of those little-known human beings which dwell in the realms of imagination.
