SOCIAL AND BAZAAR.
FUNDS FOR MAORI CHILDREN
A social evening, combined with a "bring and buy" bazaar, was held in the rooms of the Catholic Women's League, organised by the Maori Returned Soldiers' Club. The objective was to raise funds for the benefit of Maori soldiers' children at Christmas time.
The function was opened by Sir George Richardson, who spoke of the splendid work which was being done by the organisation. A ladies' section has recently been formed nntl the stall arrangements were in their hands. The stallholders were: Airs. IT. W. Scott (president), sweets; Mrs. R. J. Taylor, needlework; Mrs. .T. Carter, surprise packets; Mrs. Maungatai Paora-Bab-bington, cakes; and Airs. Raiha Bell, produce. A bouquet was presented to Sir George Richardson for Lady Richardson, who was unable to be present, and the ladies of the committee also presented a bouquet to Mrs. H. W. Scott, wife of the president of the association, who is also president of the ladies' section.
A pleasant musical programme included songs by Miss J. Bruce and Mrs. Gillop, elocutionary items by Mrs. Carroll, and liakas and action songs by a party under the direction of Mr. W. Robb, while Mr. Lou Paul sang several of his very popular songs. Later a Dutch auction was held and the stalls cleared, resulting in a sum which will enable most of the soldiers' children in the district to receive a gift at Christmas.
