i N.Z. CHAMPION FOR ELLERSLIE RECORD FIELDS FOR SATURDAY. At the first scratch race meeting last year nine girls, represeiting two clubs, turned out. Last Saturday, when the president of the centre, Mr. H. L. Towers, declared the season, open 25 girls were present to compete. Kiwi with nine had the largest complement, with Otahuhu and Lynndale next in numerical strength. Auckland Club was making its first appearance at the scratch meetings. A pleasing appearance was that of Papatoetoe's star sprinter M. Grindrod. She ! received a very cordial welcome. Although rain made it necessary to abandon the meeting, heats of the 75 yards sprint- and the A grade javelin throw were got off. In the A. grade sprint Gladys Thomas (L) showed a good turn of speed. Dot Thomas (K) did not appear to be exerting herself. Inches only separated competitors in the B grade heats. A Kiwi recruit, U. Livingstone, though starting slowly, came with a good finish. Misses Hoskins (L), Smith (A), Silcock (K), Tliiel (O) and Lorigan (A) also showed up well for so early in Die season. Dulcie Mullins (O) hurled the javelin 10ft further than the other competitors in the A grade, with Mrs. D- Harris (K) as next .best. Of those who threw in the B grade, Joyce Stone (K) was the best and should make the higher grade very shortly. The next meeting has been fixed for 2.13 p.m. on Saturday. December 12. at Grey Lynn Park, when the events will be: Discus, broad jump, 75 yards, javelin and relay (4 x 110). Ida Campbell (Morrinsville) is expected to bo at Ellerslie with the Hamilton Club on November 28, and a short limit sprint is to be listed to give the local girls a chance to meet the New Zealand champion. At Carlaw Park on Saturday next the heats of the ladies' sprint are timed to start at 1.30 p.m. A record field has entered and if the 33 entrants all face the starter this will be the biggest number that have ever been in a race in .New Zealand.
