FORTY-HOUR WEEK.

LOCAL BODY LABOURERS. Whether the outside staff of the Nortlicote Borough Council are to work a 40-hour week has been shelved until an award has been made by the Arbitration Court for the Auckland Suburban Local' Bodies' Labourers' Union. This decision of the council is to be communicated to the secretary of the union, who had written asking the council to give effect to the 40-hour week, eliminating where necessary Saturday morning work. The letter, which came before the council last night, added that the union had no objection to essential services being carried out in the interests of the community. The Mayor, Mr. I\. Martin, said that he had been informed by Mr. S. S. Green, member of the Devonport Council, and an assessor on Conciliation Council, that he understood that the Court would probably sit in Wellington in Dec'ember. It had been agreed tentatively in Conciliation Council that payment should be per hour for a 40-hour week, not per week. That would mean reduced wages for the local body unionists.
