REGULAR ATTENTION NEEDED.

PATENT FIRE EXTINGUISHERS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The violent explosion of a fire extinguisher, tested to withstand a pressure of 3501b to the square inch, after it had been used at a fire on premises in the city on October 21, gave rise to a discussion by the Cliristehurch Fire Board to-night. The superintendent's report said that a man put down the extinguisher, thinking it empty, and it blew up to the ceiling and burst. Many such extinguishers were in buildings everywhere, and few had been examined since they were purchased. The man who handled this particular extinguisher might have been seriously hurt, or even killed. Unless this class of extinguisher was periodically attended to it could not be relied upon to give protection against fire, the report added. It was agreed that the ~board should encourage the use of extinguishers, but should emphasise the necessity for appliances being given regular attention.
