DRAMA AND COMEDY.

Amazing Hold-up Incidents at ( Melbourne. THRILLING CHASE FOLLOWS, j■ MELBOURNE, November 15. Amazing incidents which were by turn ■ dramatis and ludicrous followed an audacious attempt by three bandits to kidnap a man from among a crowd of . 500 bettors and starting price book- ; makers 011 ,an unoccupied allotment known as "Little Flemington" yesterday afternoon. During a thrilling hour of intense excitement 300 men chased the bandits' car as it moved from the scene of the hold-up. A shot was fired from the car as a policeman chased it on a motor cycle. Boulders were rolled on the pursuers as they climbed the face of a quarry. Two of the bandits induced the driver of an ice wagon to drive them toward open country on the pretext that they were chasing some robbers, but these bandits were captured after a high speed chase by the police. • The third bandit, who had swum across the river, was captured as he emerged from the water. Later he escaped, but subsequently was arrested again. The incident began when two men, saying they were gaming policemen, seized a man whom they thought was a bookmaker, led him to a car and began to drive away. The pursuit by the infuriated crowd followed and police assistance was called. The police believe the arrested men were concerned in several recent hold-ups. ; ' 1 1 ' j i J : ;
