WAITAKERE PARK.

THE NEED FOR ACTION,

(To tlic Editor.)

In his letter of the 10th inst. Mr. J jj Paterson misses the whole point, viz., that nothing has .been clone becauss our Auckland members of Parliament would seem either not to care or else to have any influence. The Bruce trustees offered £1000 and Mr. E. Earle Vaile £200, but nothing lias resulted. Why? Surely because there is nobody to acquire anv land that could be held as a National Park The Auckland City Council passes a pi ou j resolution, but does nothing more. Its inaction jeopardises two priceless assets: (1) ' The j water catchment area, which may shortly h e an isolated basin over which the moistureladen winds will sweep without depositing more than a fraction of the water necessary to maintain our meagre reserve of water (2) The potential park area on the West Coast extending from the Manukau Heads to Bethell's —a forest area affording with the fresh eea winds an infinitely healthier recuperating ground than the more enervating and unfortunately more easily reached beaches on the gulf. Are our politicians, both Parliamentary and local, so lacking in a ]j initiative and foresight that they can only obey the crack of a whip concerned in hours and. pence? If they would wake up, the sum mentioned by Mr. Paterson, though probably excessive, could 'be found for °a greater benefit than their present horizon KAURL
