NIGHT FLYING.

AUSTRALIAN MAILS.

SERVICE BETWEEN CAPITALS,

SEEKING INFORMATION.

Captain K." M. Frewin, an Australian air mail pilot, who is a through passenger by the Monterey, ifiade 540' crossings of Bass Strait, between Tasmania and Victoria, in two years without an accident. Ho is on his way to the United States to study air line developments.

Captain Frewin said that night flying was not carried out in Australia, but there had been a decision to conduct air mail services between all the capitals at night, but this could not be undertaken until there was the necessary ground organisation, and his visit to America was to collect all the information available.

The 'plane that Captain Frewin piloted across Bass Strait for two years was a D.H.BG—the type of machine that has been involved in several major accidents. Captain Frewin said that despite the inquiries that had been held, including a special investigation, it had not been ascertained what was the cause of the accidents. His .position in the service was flying superintendent and chief pilot. Captain Frewin commended the New Zealand Government for seeking the advice of experts in respect to civil aviation. He thought Australia would be well advised to follow in the Dominion's footsteps in this connection.
