SOLICITOR CHARGED.
SEQUEL TO ROAD FATALITY. NEGLIGENCE ALLEGED. (By Telegraph.—Preßs Association.) CHRISTCIIURCH, this day. The hearing of a charge of negligently driving a motor car so as to cause death against William Robert Oliver, solicitor, was concluded in the Police Court today. The charge was a sequel to an accident on September 30, in which a young woman cyclist named Bedford was fatally injured. Evidence was given that deceased had good sight and hearing, and that her bicycle was equipped with a white mudguard, red reflector and an efficient electric lamp.
Another motorist, George Percival Bradford, said accused's car passed him before the accidcnt. He estimated the speed at 40 to 50 miles an hour. The night was clear and 'moonlit, and he estimated visibility at 150 to 200 yards. He said accused was naturally excited after the accident, but had all his wits about him. Accused took charge of the situation and managed it well.
Harry 0. Haydon, porter, who was riding a bicycle in the vicinity, said he spoke with accused. He would not say accused was drunk and would not say he was sober.
Fred Holland, clerk, said he estimated accused's speed at 30 miles an hour. In his opinion there were no grounds for an allegation of excessive speed.
This evidence was supported by Clarence Gregory Hahn, a passenger in Holland's car.
Constable J. Metlier said accused told him he was travelling at about 16 miles an hour, and did not see the girl until he was Bft away from her. He stopped his car in three lengths. Witness said he considered accused was under the influence of liquor. He was aware that the police doctor and accused's own doctor had certified that accused was fit to drive, but in witness' opinion it was possible for a man to pull himself together.
Sergeant Barnes produced a statement in which accused admitted that he had three medium .shandies and a small sherry between 5.25 p.m. and the time of the accident.
Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. Bail of £100 was allowed.
