NAVAL BASE.
ACQUIRING AUCKLAND LAND. SOMETHING LIKE ADEQUACY. , (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLING TON, TJi ursday. An ameiiclment to the Naval Defence Act which is needed to give effect to an agreement between the Auckland Harbour Board and the Naval Board was introduced by Governor-General's Message in the House of Representatives to-night and read a first time. The Prime Minister explained that it had reference to the taking over of a piece of land and dealt with the naval base in Auckland. . "It is really a question of providing something like adequacy in t.lie way of a naval base," added Mr. Savage, who assured the House that everybody was agreed about it and the bill gave effect to the agreement. Mr. "J. G. Cobbe (National, Oroua), former Minister of Defence: Does this include the extension of workshops? Mr. Savage: Yes, and generally making improvements. The bill also provides for the appointment of an officer of the accountancy branch of the Royal Navy as naval secretary and for the establishment of a naval board to consist of the Minister of Defence, one or two persons being executive officers of the Royal Navy and the Naval Secretary. The powers, functions and duties of the board are to be prescribed by regulations.
