SHIPPING PROTECTION.
UNITED STATES ADVISED.
(By Telegraph,— Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. When the Minister of Marine, Mr. Eraser, introduced the Protection of British Shipping Bill into the House of Representatives to-day he said the subject matter of the measure had L'eeii discussed for a period of years. The general feeling was that something should be done. The Commonwealth of Australia concurred, although the legislation that would bo passed in that country might take a different form to that now Introduced. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Forbes: Are they bringing in a similar bill The Minister suid the Commonwealth Government intended bringing down a bill before the adjournment. The New Zealand bill took power to enforce by Order-in-Copncil the method of prohibition, but the provisions of the bill would not come into force immediately passing of the measure. Restrictions could be imposed when the Government thought the time had arrived to do that. The restrictions were the same as applied in the United States with trade between Honolulu and. San Francisco. Australia was prepared to in its own way and there was no objection 011 the part of the British Government. Incidentally the matter had been brought before the United States authorities through the usual diplomatic channels and it had been indicated that before the bill became operative the Government would be prepared to ccnsidsr any representations that the United States cared to make. Provision was made that the bill would not authorise the application of restrictions to any country if any rights conferred 011 that country by any treaty or convention that for the time being was binding 011 the New Zealand Government would be infringed. The bill was read a first time.
