WHEAT GROWING.
MINISTER GRATIFIED. SPECIAL VARIETIES SOWN. (By Telegraph.- —Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, announces that there has been a gratifying response to his request, through the Wheat Committee, for wlieatgrowers to consider entering into special contracts for the growing of the "Jumbuck" and "Marquis" varieties of wheat this spring up to a total of 1000 acres. Up to the time of the closing of contracts a few days ago 1184 acres had been sown under contract by upwards of 50 growers. The incentive behind the scheme is the payment to growers of a premium for wheat harvested of quality above what is customarily fixed as a standard for these two varieties. Moreover, the Wheat Committee is anxious to encourage the growing of "Jumbuck" and "Marquis" to the fullest extent possible, in order to lessen and eventually eliminate, if possible, the need for the importation of wheat from overseas.
