TROTTING.

AUCKLAND CLUB. THE SPRING MEETING. GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. REVIEW OF PRINCIPAL EVENTS. The splendid response received in acceptances by the Auckland Trotting Club augurs well for the success of its spring fixture, which opens at Epsom on Saturday and will be continued on Labour Day. Good fields are engaged in the rcspecth e races and a fine day's sport should be provided. The' following is a re\ iew of the candidates in the- principal events:—

The Jellicoe Handicap. Eight have been paid up for in the Jellicoe Handicap and with most of the cindidates possessing recent form the contest should be a good one. Star Pronto failed to pace correctly in either of his . starts at the Waikato meeting, but this was not his best form .and he can be expected to do better. That he took no harm from the outings is shown by the splendid way in which he is woi'king. He is apt to make a mistake at some stage of the journey, but should he go steadily all the way on Saturday he may • be one of the hardest to beat. Treasure Bond was responsible for two satisfactory efforts at her last two starts,' finishing second to King's Guide in the Waikato Handicap, two miles, and later in the day occupying a similar position to the same pacer in the open mile and a quarter event. He has arrived on the scene and is l cpoi ted to have gone on well since taking up his quarters at Otahuhu. He will be driven by A. Bryce and the Southern representative may have to be considered. Ironside, by his two victories over two miles on the Taranaki circuit at Easter, showed that he has no trouble in running out a fast-run two miles and he should go well. It was unfortunate that he suffered a slight injury just prior -to the Waikato fixture, as this necessitated his withdrawal from his engagements at that meeting. He is stated to have got through his work satisfactorily of late and is expected to go a good race. King's Guide will not lack for condition when paraded on Saturday, as the chestnut has been doing everything expected of him in very taking style at Takanini. He has been responsible for some fine Exhibitions in his last few starts and won a -double at the recent Waikato meeting. In all of his races King's Guide has been doing his work impressively over the final stages and he should_ develop into an excellent stayer. Nervie's Last has shown no signs of staying ability in his races over two miles and there is no reason to expect him to 'do better on this occasion. The Austra-lian-bred pacer has fine speed over middle distances, but tires quickly in longdistance events. He will be coupled with King's Guide. Gold-Dredge failed to act at all well when raced at the Auckland ' winter meeting, being one of the last horses all the way. This was hot her best form and she can be counted upon to do better,, This mare ran a couple of fine seconds to Bonny Azure on the Taranaki circuit and it should not be long before j she is again contributing towards her Ikeep: King's Play looks like turning out " one of the best stayers we have -had in Auckland for some time and the prospects •of the- Tamahere-o.wned; gelding look '-bright. He,"has outclas«!ed' i; tbe„ opposition 'at his three starts, leftving them to 'when-*'hefha* with - about half a mile: to , : go. King's l Play is -"-Teported to have trained on in-Mhe interim and. he will probably start a warm . favourite, . and his recent -hform warrants that position. Willie Derby completes the field on-108yds, but he has not raced for a long time. However, at his best he would have a very difficult task to heat some of those nearer, the front. Summed up, it looks like King's Play being favourite, with good support for King's Guide and Ironside. - The Open Sprint.

Of the twelve engaged 'in the Electric Handicap, the open mile and a quarter event, four are also down to contest the Jellicoe Handicap, and their earlier form may prove a reliable guide as to their prospects in this race. Gold Dredge lias won over the distance and should not be without prospects. liolioro has-not shown any form for a long time and lie does not appeal, hut reserved for this event Ironside would come in for solid support. He finished third over a mile and a quarter at the Auckland winter meeting, when having his first race for some time and he can be expected to rejoin the list of winners at an early date. King's Play will most likely contest his early engagement and the stable may rely upon Lady Fame. This mare iost. a lot of ground at the start of the sprint race at Epsom in June, but showed great speed once on the journey and was handy in fourth position when the field came round the home turn. However, she broke under pressure and finished out of a place. Her effort augured' well for her future, prospects and she'should prove one of the hardest to beat at Epsom on Saturday. Nervie's Last is partial to the distance and will most, likely be the favourite, "especially as she will be coupled with King's Warrior. Xcrvic's Last won at licr last appearance and, being a particularly good beginner, will give his supporters a great run for their money. Pukemiro does not appeal and neither does Prince Pedro, who may feel the lack of racing. He is partial to a heavy track. Travis has been in work only a short time and is as yet a trifle on the Wig side, although lie is improving with every workout. Travis has fine early speed and should he get to the front in the early stages will ensure the pace being on all the way. Auto Machine appears to have passed his best. Great Parrisli has. done no racing for a considerable time and it may be Christmas before the black pacer reaches his best. King's Warrior is brilliant over the distance, but he is another who may have been better served with a race. He is getting ready for the Auckland Trotting Cup and may not be quite tuned up yet. A .trio that appeal at this stage are Nervfe s Last, Lady Fame and Ironside. The fields engaged are:— 12.0—-WAITEMATA HANDICAP (Trotters) of f 135. One mile and a half. Limit 3.49.
