NIGHT PATROL.
ONE TREE HIL.E PROPOSAL.
A scheme for the introduction of a night patrol system to the district between the hours of 0 p.m. and 4 a.m., was outlined in a letter received by the One; Tree Hill Borough Council last evening. The writer, an ex-member of the New Zealand Police Force, sought the sanction of tlio council to canvass residents with a view to establishing a patrol system similar to that which has hcen in operation in Rcmucra for the past twelve months. The scheme, he explained, involved the providing of uniformed patrolmen consisting of expolice officers, whose aim would bo to assist the Police Department and protcct life and property. The Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstinc, did not think "the matter was one in which the council should take official action. The scheme was an extension of that introduced to Remuera, and which was in force in practically every suburb in Sydney. He had had experience of the Sydney scheme which had proved a wonderful success, he said. While the matter was one for individual residents, ho thought the council was interested to the extent that it should satisfy itself that the applicant and those associated with him were fit and proper persons for the job. Some councillors feared that if the council supported the scheme it could not expect help from the Police Departmcnt in providing extra patrols in the borough. Finally it was agreed, however, that the applicant be requested tp., call at the council ollice, and that the Police Department be requested to advise the council ns to his suitability to undertake the patrol service.
