TAKAPUNA DISCUSSION.
CONSIDERATION DEFERRED,
Messrs. McXab and Donaldson also waited upon the Takapuna Borough Council last night, and earnestly requested the council to reconsider its decision not to contribute its share of £411 towards the cost of the Waitakere Drive scheme. In introducing the two Mayors, the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. ,T. Guiniven, described the scheme as "Bob Semple's folly." Mr. McXab pointed out that the scheme was first put to the chief engineer of the Public Works Department by the Suburban Local Bodies' Association. "Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would obtain a contribution of £80,000 from the Government," said Mr. McXab. He said that when completed the road would be a wonderful asset to Auckland. The Waitemata County Council had offered to contribute twice as much as it was asked to pay as its quota. Mount Eden Borough Council was also willing to pay its share, although, like most other local bodies, it was hard pressed for money. Several councillors asked Messrs. McNab and Donaldson whether there was any likelihood of any recurring expenditure on the upkeep of the road when it was completed. Mr. Donaldson assured them that there would not be any recurring expenditure, the Main Highways Board having undertaken to keep the road in order. After further discussion the council decided to defer the matter for further consideration.
