RAILWAYS OPEN UP LAND FOR FARMING.— With the advent of the East Coast railway many acres of land in the Wairoa district which until now have been useless for farming, will be made available for settlement. This picture, taken on Kairangi Station, is of a portion of eight hundred acres which a few years ago grew nothing but flax and raupo and was the principal breeding ground of wild fowl in the district. Now it is one of the richest farming areas. The railway embankment, which carries the line between Wairoa and Waikokopuis in the background.
