ROCKY PATCH.
DISCOVERY MADE OFF KAWATJ The master of the Government steamer Matai, which arrived from the Hauraki Gulf this morning after attending the lighthouses and unattended lights, reports having located a rocky shoal patch off Kawau. The patch, wliich ]ias a least depth of five fathoms at low tide, is of small area. It is situated in latitude 3ii degrees 27 minutes south and longitude 174 degrees 50 minutes east, Flat Roclc light tower bearing 310 degrees, distance four cables. The position given is nearly half a mile south-east of Flat Rock, better known as Canoe Rock, and is towards the. outside 'of Tiritiri Island. The existence of tlie patch has been known for years to a few yachtsmen and fishermen as a favourable spot for catching liapuka. With a least depth of water of 30 feet over it at low spring tide?, it is not dangerous, being .out of the I fairway of large vessels. |
