WHO WAS LONG JOHN SILVER?

That well-known villain, Long John ■Silver, is to be found in Robert Louis Stevenson's famous book, "Treasure Islan-l." Although he had only one leg iie was able to use his crutch so skilfully that he could get about with surprising speed. He was, moreover, a very real enemy, for he was cruel and extremely cunning. Long John became ship's cook on Sqirre Trelawney's ship, the Hispaniola, which had been fitted out to find hidden treasure. Long John obtained his own, job by false pretences, and by similar wiles he got some other expirates included in the crew. During the outward voyage, these ruffians plan to seize the treasure for themselves when it is found and then to get control of the ship. They also plan to leave .Squire Trelawney and the other honest members of the crew marooned on the island—Treasure Island. . How their plot is defeated by Jim Hawkins, the cabin boy, overhearing their schemes and warning the captain, is part of Stevenson's famous story to be enjoyed to the full: And when you have read "Treasure Island," carry on with some more of Stevenson's work, such as "Travels with a Donkey" and "Kidnapped."
