CAPITAL LOST.
IN FREEZING WORKS. "BUILT AND ABANDONED." INDUSTRIAL CONTROL. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter. I ... WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The immense amount of capital lost in New Zealand through the absence of • "some form of control over enterprises, was a point made by Mr. C. H. Burnett (Government, Tauranga), in supporting the Industrial Eiiiciency Bill in the House of Representatives to-day. In his own district and in Wanganui, he said, freezing works had been built and abandoned, , though if there had been a plan they would never have started, and thousands of pounds would have been i saved. The Kakahi works near Wanga- ' nui, the Taihape, Wliakatane, and Hicks Bay works were all monuments of waste, for the only people who made anything out . of them were their promoters. He, contended that the same applied to many dairy. factories which were Uneconomic, and the Government was now proceeding to shut down some' of them. Mr. S. G. Smith (National; New "Plymouth): Does . .not the member know that steps were; taken to check this? Mr, Burnett replied that further step's ' would have to be taken, and the only method of controlling the situation Wis j| to have a Bureau of Industries, ne(#fe j sarily unc';;r Government control. It jp.; would be necessary to see that the ; number of fertiliser works was not £i, unduly increased.
