NAME CHOSEN.
NEW RIDGEWAY ROAD. "WAITAKERE SCENIC DRIVE." SO!> TO BE TURNED FEIDA-. "Waitakere Scenic Drive" lias been the name chosen ror the new road on the crest of the Waitakere Ranges, and the first sod will be turned by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, at a ceremony next Friday. The Major of Auckland, Mr. Ernest Davis, brought the matter up at the conclusion of the meeting of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board last evening, when there were a number of the suburban mayors present. Mr. Davis said that the finance committee of the Auckland City Council had recommended "Waitakere Scenic Drive" as the name, as there ware three or four Coronation roads. It would be advisable for them to be unanimous 011 the matter. Waitakere meant "waterfall." Mr. A. Rosser suggested that the name meant "plenty of wood and water." Mr. Davis said that the Tamaki Drive had always been called the waterfront road, and he was considering asking the City Council to change the name to the more popular one. He considered that "Waitakere Scenic Drive" would be far better than Coronation Drive. Mr. G. G. Grant said that a Maori name shouTd be retained. One suggestion had been Waitakere Way. They had a Broadway in New York. A member: One in Newmarket too. The proposal made by Mr. Davis was supported by Mr. T. McNab, Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. H. A. Anderson, Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, Mayor of One Tree Hill, Mr. S. Donaldson, Mayor of Newmarket, and Mr. C. M. McCullough, chairman of the Mount Roskill Road Board. Mr. Davis said that he would also invite the opinion of the Waitemata County Council, so that he would be able to inform his Excellency before he left Wellington, that a name hud been decided upon.
