TAUMARUNUI CLUB.

THE OPENING DAY. Brown Lap Surprises — Favourite Wins Hurdle Race. The weather is perfect for the opening day of the Taumarunui Racing Club's spring meeting, held at Paeroa to-day. There is a large attendance, and the going is in good order. Racing commenced with the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap, for which Blue Queen and Illimani were withdrawn. Sir Tommy, General Rubc and Miss Mestor were in most demand, and the winner, Brown Lap, paid double figures. Athea turned round w"ien the barrier lifted and lost a lot of ground, the early leaders being Joyzell, Aramis, Brown Lap, Okauia and Maori Song. Okauia was in charge across the top from Browj*. Lap, Aramis, Joyzell, Sir Tommy and Betterment, but entering the straight Brown Lap took the lead attended by Okauia, Betterment, Aramis, Joyzell, Sir Tommy and Maori Song. In the run home Brown Lap drew out to win by two lengths and a half from Aramis, who beat Maori Song by a short head. Joyzell, Sir Tommy, Race Call, Betterment, Rothoon and Lily Lu were next. The Hurdles. Bellbroney and Hawthorn dropped out of the Handicap Hurdles, and most support was accorded Curlew, Kanapa and Race Whip, the first-named winning by a narrow margin. Race Whip, Stormy Weather and Kanapa were the early leaders, and at the first fence London fell, leaving Little Musk in charge from Kanapa, Stormy Weather, Dark Marble, Race Whip and Curlew. Passing the stands Kanapa was in front from Little Musk, Race Whip, Curlew, Dark Marble, Stormy Weather and Overlap heading the others. Curlew weht up fast, and was in the van along the back, with Race Whip, Kanapa, Little Musk, Dark Marble and Stormy Weather next. There was little change into the straight and Curlew held on to beat Race Whip by three-quarters of a length, with kanapa four lengths away. Dark Marble, Little Musk, Rusty Jack, Surrvanna, Overlap and Stormy Weather were next. The Trial. Blue Queen and Racela were not saddled \ip for the Trial Handicap, in which the chief selections were Gay Flier, Lady Valma and Strathire. Lady Valma, Aramis, Locknit and Gay Flier were first to show out, and along the back the order was Locknit, Lady Valma, Aramis and Gay Flier, with Ellanui and Strathire following. Turning for home Locknit was attended by Lady Valma, Ellanui and Aramis, then came Strathire and Gay Flier. Ellanui and Gay Flier put in their claim over the last furlong, but the former failed to reach Locknit by half a length, Gay Flier being two lengths further back. Aramis, Lady Valma, Strathire and Queen Lu were next. Detailed results:— KEREPEEHI HACK HANDICAP of £SO. Five furlongs. 6—B—BROWN LAP, br g, aged, by Lnpidary—Dido (Mr. R. k - .^" lker) - 7.7— W.
