Adonis, the Graecised form of the Phoenician word "Ailon," meaning "lord," is the name of a beautiful youth beloved by Aphrodite. Being mortally wounded by a wild boar, Aphrodite sprinkled nectar into his blood, whence flowers immediately sprang up. On his descent to the infernal world, Persephone also became enamoured of him; but, commiserating Aphrodite, she allowed Adonis to spend six months every year with her in the upper world.
