HINTS AND IDEAS.

TO IMPROVE THE COMPLEXION.

A simple yet excellent treatment for the complexion consists of an application of oil of sweet almonds and white of egg. This should be applied at night. Beat the white of an egg, add a teaspoonful of oil of sweet almonds and beat to a froth. Wipe the face and neck with a piece of cotton wool dipped in rosewater, dry, and apply the egg and oil with a clean swab of cotton wool, dabbing it on with sharp little taps and letting it remain till the morning. FOR THE HOUSEWIFE. A length of flexible 6pring curtain rod is excellent for cleaning an obstructed pipe from the sink or wash basin. It is a good plan to fix cup-hooks in the corks of bottles which are in constant use. The corks can then be removed quickly and easily. If celluloid knitting needles are bent, pour hot water over them, and you can straighten them with the fingers. To harden them place in cold water. Turpentine added to starch helps the iron to run smoothly, and also gives a high gloss to clothes. A few drops only should be used at a time. To rewaterproof pram hoods, mix sufficient lamp black with linseed oil to make it like ink. Paint over hoods which have been wiped over with turpentine and allowed to dry. The result is a glossy black waterproof finish. Half the usual quantity of sugar used in preparing rhubarb will be sufficient if a pinch of bicarbonate is added to the fruit a short time before serving. A cheap and effective covering for the roof of a shed, summer house, etc., can be made as follows: Get a piece of the strongest brown paper you can find, tack it down over the roof, then give it two coats of paint. It should last for years. If a velour hat looks shabby, put some finely powdered salt in the oven, and, when it is hot, rub it into the hat with soft paper. As soon as a piece of paper looks dirtv, change it, and use fresh salt frequently. Finish off with a stiff brush to bring up the surface of the material.
