PERIODICALS.
"Chambers' Journal" continues to maintain its popularity for entertaining and instructive matter. The August number has» some capital tales, the opening one being on the knout and the effect on a man of flogging as part of his prison punishment. Among the articles of instruction are one on the ancient and romantic art of pearl fishing, another on making money by inventions, • arid another on modern well-drilling, in the course of which the writer remarks that diviners are still largely a mystery, and that little exact scientific knowledge exists to account for the diviner's peculiar claims. Among the science and arte notes is one about fountain pens with transparent reservoirs. There are several poems, and an article by Henry Leach on the "Heart of Things," in which, writing about speed, he mentions that there were 7,000,000 cyclists on the road in the Old Country this summer.
