THE CASPIAN SEA.
THREATENED EXTINCTION. MOSCOW. The Caspian Sea is threatened with extinction because of irrigation works which drain the rivers that form its water supply. Professor B. Apollov, a prominent Soviet geologist, says that since 1925 the sea has lost 7435 square miles in area, and that while in 1925 the water level fell 24 inches, in March this year it was 1.9 inches lower still than in 1925. The professor urges that measures should be taken to discharge into the Caspian a portion of the waters of northern rivers, as well as the Don, to preserve the valuable fisheries and the sea for navigation.
