SOCIETY OF ARTS.
ANNUAL MEETING HELD. CATERING FOR THE COUNTRY. A proposal to allow people in country districts to see original works of art by sending high quality reproductions for exhibition was referred to in the report presented at the annual meeting of the Auckland Society of Arts last evening. The scheme had much to commend it, stated the report. The society now has a total membership of 369, 'including 185 honorary, 168 working and 16 life members. Thirtysix new honorary members were enrolled as the result of a membership campaign and it is hoped that the position will be improved still further. A satisfactory financial position was revealed by the statement of accounts, and mention was made of the appointment of the society to administer a fund of £1200 from the Carnegie Corporation. As a token of the society's interest in the scheme, which makes scholarships available to students of outstanding ability in the creative arts, the council undertook to find a sum equal to the net income derived from the grant. Officers for the year are as follow:— Patrons, Sir George Wilson, • Sir Cecil Leys, Dr. E. B. Gunson, Messrs. J. F. Ewen and Oliver Nicholson; president, Mr. R. 0. Gross; vice-presidents, Messrs. E.
