TRAMPING CLUB'S OUTING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, Tuesday. Under conditions which were extremely uncomfortable, with at times miniature blizaards, and with a keen, biting wind on the ridges, a party comprising 17 members of the Tongariro Tramping Club held their first outing to Mount Ruapehu during the week-end. Arriving at the Chateau at 9 a.m., the members divided into two groups, one party going on to Scoria Flats, where excellent snow conditions prevailed for the day's ski-ing and tobogganing. The others, under the leadership of Messrs. Gordon Hunt and L. Bunce, took the six-mile trail for Taranaki Falls and the Tama Lakes. The two Tama Lakes, twin circlets of blue in their craterial settings, made a pleasant sight, backed on either side by the mist-enshrouded peaks of Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. From the Upper Tama a descent was made to the lake edge, where a halt was made to boil the billy. Following lunch, a complete circuit, by way of the Great Rift, was made of the Big Tama, and under somewhat frigid conditions, the return trip was made to the Chateau by way of the Taranaki Falls and the lower track. The enthusiasm displayed by the new members has encouraged the committee to make tentative arrangements for a two-day visit to the park during Labour Day week-end. This will be fully discussed at the first general meeting of the club, which is to be held next week.
