MORE BUSINESS DOING. GOLD SHARES FIRM. BANK SHARES ARE DULL. There lias been a slightly improved tone on the Auckland Stock Exchange over the last 24 hours, and a fair volume of business has been recorded. The improvement noted yesterday in gold mining shares lias been generally maintained. At this moi ning's call Marthas were a shade easier between 19/8 and £1, but Junctions improved with a market from 3.6 to 3 8. Waihis were quoted from 10/4 to 11/, and Mount Morgans, after business at 14 5, had a market from 14, 2 to 14,, 3. Placer Development had their first sale since June at £4 19/, showing a drop of 15/6. The banking section was dull. Commercials were easier between IS. 3 and 18/4, and New Zealands were wide apart from £1 18/ to £1 19/. Nationals were again only bright spot in insurances, changing hands Id higher, at 18/9, with a subsequent market between 18/8 and 19/. In local issues Pukemiros were quoted ex dividend, with sellers at £1 4.(5 and no buyers, and Woolworths (X.Z.) were easier, with buyers at £5 1/, sellers i's 3/6. Staples' Breweries were on offer at the lower price of £1 14/9. Australian issues had steady bidding with minor fluctuations. British Tobaccos and Dunlops were both quoted ex dividend, the market for the former being between £2 2/6 and £2 3, 6. and for the latter from 17/3 to 17/7. Broken Hills sold 3d higher, at £3 16/3, with more wanted. In Government stocks '40's were on offer at £102, with '49's and "55's both available at £106. Quieter at Noon. As the morning proceeded business quietened, and only four sales were lecorded at the noon call. Buyers for Commercial Banks dropped their offers to 18/2, and a seller of New South Wales came in at £33. National Insurances continued firm, being again asked for at 18/9. A buyer came in for Staples' Breweries at £ 1 14/, J sellers retiring to £1 15/3. Buyers for! Broken Hills dropped their offers 3d, to I £3 16/, but sellers moved up by a similar j amount to £3 16/9. Electro. Zincs were i very firm, with buyers for the ordinaries at £2 3/ and for the preferences at £2 5/6. Consolidated Bricks wetjg close to business, with quotations from 9/o to 9/6. INTEREST RATES. The return to the investor on his outlay, based upon the latest dividends, works out as follows on the latest sales. When Government stocks are included, the calculation provides for redemption at the earlier date of maturity. When payment is made in sterling, exchange is added.
