FAR EAST TENSION.

REASSURANCE TO BRITAIN". RUGBY, September 27. It is understood that when the British Ambassador to Tokyo, Sir Robert Clive, calle'd on the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, he inquired in regard to the situation arising out of the episode at Shanghai in which a Japanese bluejacket was murdered.' Sir Robert was assured that, seriously as the Japanese Government regarded the Shanghai incident, which was one of a series, it had no intention of taking hasty action.

While it is clear that the incident had considerably increased anxiety for what was recognised in British circles already to be a delicate situation, reports state that discussions are continuing between the Japanese Ambassador to Nanking and the Chinese Government.
