HOUSING SCHEME.
CHAKUNE OPINION. MORE PARTICULARS WANTED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, Friday. The Government's housing scheme was considered at the monthly meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council, when opinion was divided as to the advisability of the council taking part in the matter. The council some months ago agreed that there was a definite need for better housing accommodation, in the borough, but it was understood that the houses would he erected at no cost to the borough, the council only having the letting and administration of the buildings. The discussion was introduced by way of a lengthy communication from the State Advances Department, which desired to know the intentions* of the council regarding the matter of raising the money. Lack of Interest. The Mayor (Mr. L. W. Nation) thought the council should get full particulars of the'housing scheme. They were not committing themselves to anything, and if they were not prepared at* present to enter into the scheme, perhaps they could give their support to any private applications for loans. It was decided to advise the State Advances Department that a committee comprising Messrs. Jordan, Taylor, Mahoney, and Prance had been set up to go into the matter. A combined meeting of public bodies is to be called to consider the question.
